Known as the 'King of Fruits' in India, the mango is a tropical fleshy fruit which comes from the 'mangifera' family and a native to the Indian subcontinent and is the source from where it spread to the rest of the world.
This golden fleshed fruit has a nice balance of sweetness, acidity and flavour, a soft pulpy texture matched with a warm fragrance. Mangoes are popular for their concentration of antioxidant vitamins A and C, along with a variety of phytochemicals and nutrients. A single mango can provide up to 40% of an individual's daily dietary fibre needs.
In India, mangoes occupy 22% of the total fruit production covering an area of 1.23 million hectares to produce 10.99 million tonnes of the fruit. Though Uttar Pradesh has the largest area of 0.27 million hectares under mango, Andhra Pradesh has the highest productivity of 12 tonnes per hectare. Other states in India that produce mangoes include Bihar and Karnataka.
