Pomegranates, 'punica granatum' or 'super fruit' are blood-red crystal seeds with a winey fruit juice have been popular for their taste. But discoveries in its health benefits have increased demand for the fruit, over the years. Pomegranate aril juice provides about 16% of an adult's daily vitamin C requirement per 100 ml serving. Its ellagic acid works as an antioxidant and is responsible for reducing levels of bad cholesterol, and in effect, relaxing the pressure on blood vessels in our body, and working as a tonic for the heart. The sweet varieties of the fruit give immediate relief to stomach ailments and also work well as a laxative.

VARIETIES

An average fruit size is roughly 300 gms. Ganesh and Bhagwa are the two most popular varieties of pomegranate grown in India. Grown primarily in Maharashtra, the Ganesh variety is light coloured with a yellowish pink outer colour and softer seeds.

AVAILABILITY MONTH

The Bhagwa variety is more in demand in both domestic and international markets. This is because it grows with a thick, smooth red skin, and looks attractive. Besides, its thick skin protects the fruit from infections, giving it a longer shelf life.

GROWING AREAS

In Maharashtra - India, the yield of pomegranates makes it the important fruit commercial crop for the state. Out of the annual national production of 1.25 lac hectares being used for this fruit, two-thirds of this area is grown in Maharashtra alone. The other states that grow this fruit include Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
